Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hi! Tech, Tech, VPI - Brian
The tragedy this Monday is impossible to describe in words. I am a member of the class of ‘95 from Virginia Tech, and while I don’t know any of the victims personally, the release today of their names and biographies brought tears to my eyes as I read through them 6,000 miles and what seems like a lifetime away here in Spain.
From alumni I have heard sorrow, confusion, anger and most of all sympathy and prayers. From faculty I have heard stories of tragedy, bravery and most of all hope, that the VT community and all the wonderful things it represents will be the dominant force.
Here it has been difficult and confusing; news comes slowly and uncertainly, however the world here is watching and grieving. A world away trying to explain, rationalize and answer the questions the people have about America, Virginia, guns in America and why are not any easier or less thought-provoking then they are anywhere else. I don’t have answers and perhaps there are none. I do know first-hand that people who have no reason to know VT or otherwise care about the events of Monday grieve and pray for the victims in this tragedy; it renews in some small way my belief in people and the world.
To the students, families, faculty and staff, please know that in addition to the extended family of Hokies you are forefront in the hearts and minds of people the world over.
