A few nights ago we went to a performance at the local Flamenco school in Sacromonte, next door to La Chumbera.  No, there was no Paulina Rubio, but it was a show that was not quite what I expected.

The show began with a wonderful traditional solo performance by one of the older female students who was incredible with castanets as well as dancing.  It was followed by traditional music and singing, complete with what I’d describe as the full flamenco orchestral – many guitarists, cellists, drummers and singers.  It was excellent!

And then the hip-hop started, complete with 5 break-dancers who would be good competition for the dancers you typically see in Union Square.  Again the dancing was very good, albeit to a stunned audience.  You may know of my love of non-sequiturs, this isn’t getting me any closer to my book though.

The remainder of the show had performances by younger students who its impossible not to love and clap outrageously for, I hope this doesn’t make the older and more accomplished students jealous.  It also had several re-appearances of the full orchestra and an incredible drum-only session.

I’d recommend the show to anyone in town, for 5€ its hard to beat.  The name of the school is Escuela Municipal de Flamenco.
