Who’s Gloria anyway? - Brian
The street we live on is Calle Gloria, its only 1 block long and not accessible by car. Sometimes when we are out shopping we’ll end up with more than we’d like to carry home – bottles of wine and jars of olives are heavy! – so we take a short ride in a taxi.
On a particularly rainy afternoon this winter we found ourselves with bags of wine and no desire to walk home, so we went to the taxi stand and got in the first taxi. He asked where to go, and we said Calle Gloria. Normally taxi drivers do not know our street so we tell them how to get there. This time however it went like this:
Us: Calle Gloria please.
Driver: No.
Us: Calle Gloria please (thinking he just hadn’t heard us).
Driver: No.
Us: Why?
Driver: Its too close to drive to.
Us: No it isn’t, its across from the church of San Pedro and San Pablo. (about 2km from where we were)
Driver: (silence)
Us: Look, we’ll pay to go there, please take us to Calle Gloria.
Driver: Ok.
So the driver proceeded to drive us around the block to what turns out to be a street named Gloria. Fortunately we all had a good sense of humor…..
