Making bark - Brian
Last weekend Shannon and I did some baking for the holidays, getting food ready for our Christmas party at our house. We made some tasty cheese pastries and other goodies, but when it came time to make the peppermint bark we had a bit of a surprise.
Candy canes are not popular here, as best I can tell there isn’t even a specific word for them, people just don’t eat a lot of mint flavored candy. After searching many candy stores and grocery stores we finally found some in a pastry shop; even though they were about 75 cents each we thought it was great to have simply found them.
As we began making the bark, one of the first things we did was unwrap each of the candy canes and put them in a bag so we could break them up. As luck would have it, as we were finishing up I came across a broken one and when I opened it little bits scattered on the counter. As I picked them up I popped one in my mouth. Thank god. The candy canes were not peppermint flavored but strawberry flavored! Spanish candy is often very sweet and fruity flavored but we’d never guessed it would go to candy canes too.
Maybe next week we’ll make the bark.
