Feria time in Granada - Brian

23 May, 2008 (10:22) | Spain

This week is “Corpus” in Granada, the annual week-long feria (fair) that is during the week of Corpus Christi (body of Christ). Corpus is filled with fun things like parades, a fair, music, arts and everything you’d expect and possibly heard of about the famous ferias in Andalucia. We went to the parade yesterday afternoon and the fairgrounds last night and had a great time; I think I had a constant smile for all of it.

Many of the events happen in the center of town, so as a tourist you might run into them and you’ll surely enjoy them. Should you really want to take advantage though, the thing to do is get a program and guide to the feria, it includes the times and places for all the events, making it easy to find everything – that is of course if you already know where everything is.

I can understand that to some extent; if you can’t speak enough spanish to ask a resident where something is then maybe you shouldn’t find everything; sometimes a town needs to be able to escape its tourists and let loose a little.
The program for the feria, while sometimes including the name of a location that is the same name that might appear on a map, usually only includes some locals-only names and information. For example one parade was listed as starting at 11am and “taking the traditional route.”

The fairgrounds with ferris wheels and all is included in the program as a map listing the location of everything at the fair site. Unfortunately the program map doesn’t include enough context on it to let you find where the fair itself is; that too is in the usual location. Not surprisingly we didn’t see a single tourist at the fair.
