This morning I went to schedule an appointment for a haircut with Africa, whom I have been seeing since she did my hair for our wedding last year. After some small talk we set an appointment and I watched as she wrote the time and “Walker” down. Noticing I was watching, she hesitated, and finally I reminded her – “Shannon”. It’s not unusual for people to forget my name here because its “foreign” – very few words start with the phonetic sound “sh” in Spanish and I am often called “Channon”, for example. Africa explained that she never forgets my surname (apellido), however, because whenever she sees me she thinks of the American television show “Walker, Texas Ranger”.

That’s great. Of all the American things she might think of when she sees me, she thinks: Chuck Norris.

Just one more reason I’m Proud To Be An American.
