Not with my beer - Brian

18 August, 2008 (01:22) | Granada, Spain, Travel

Last friday we stopped in a bar we like for a quick drink and tapa to take a break from a day of walking and shopping. The bar is a very traditional Spanish one, and besides having a great atmosphere they also serve a somewhat unique beer on tap – Cruzcampo Blanca, its an unfiltered lager with a great taste. Most bars serve the normal Cruzcampo, or, the local favorite in Granada, Alhambra. The people at Casa Enrique are serious about their beer, and the Cruzcampo Blanca is a big draw.

A popular and refreshing beer drink is the Clara, a mix of half beer and half soda water (often with a hint of lemon or lime flavor), its nice on a hot day. While we were at the bar a group of people came in and all ordered a beer. And then one of the women tried to amend her order with the bartender – a clara please. What? A clara. Not with my beer was the answer.

Rob Linehan – owner of The Stumbling Monk on Cap Hill in Seattle – is a beer enthusiast, and a first- class guy, who serves incredible Belgian beers at their intended temperature, and always in their original glass. From time to time, newbie hipsters wander in and demand PBR, and upon learning he does not carry that particular brand, proceed to lecture him about ‘supply and demand’.

Ever since I discovered how irritated he gets at this, I make it a point to remind my friends to demand PBR whenever they go there. Just once, and with a straight face. I know. I am officially 9 years old…

Hi guys and congratulations for the blog!!
I’m a Bartender from Rome and wanted to have a work experience in Granada to learn Spanish.
Can you suggest a list of the finest cocktail bar (if you have time to get the addresses and websites if they have any) in town where people really like to enjoy cocktails not only to get drunk?
Is it difficult to work in bars overthere if you know just a little spanish to start with?
Nobody so far has managed to get me Verdi Cocteleria’s address and telephone number, will you get it for me?
Maybe if I found a job there I’ll make you some of my nice drinks with spices like a sage and pineapple martini
Thanks a lot in advance for you help

Hi Massimo. I do think it would be difficult to work in a cocktail bar until you know Spanish; like anywhere there are lots of “local” names for drinks and such that you would need to learn in addition to basic conversation. I suspect if you speak Italian you will find Spanish pretty easy to pick up, we have friends from Italy who are quite happy here.

A few of the more popular cocktail bars in town are: Bar Dylan, Papalagi and Verdi. There are more, I just can’t remember the names, sorry. I also cannot find phone numbers for them. The bars all have different clients and a different vibe – some are more locals, some more tourists, some more modern, etc. Perhaps the best way to discover them is to visit Granada so you can see what you’re getting in to, you can often fly very cheap flights from Milan to Granada on Vueling.com, sometimes only 20-30e one-way.
